Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM)'s Campaign
19 January 2015
Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) believes that all disabled children, young people and their families should be able to lead fulfilling lives and be part of their community.
Their new report, 'Right from the Start: what we want from the next Government' shows that we are still a long way from achieving this. They want policy making across Government to recognise the needs of disabled children, young people and their families right from the start.
'Right from the start' highlights that:
- 8 out of 10 family carers are at breaking point because of a lack of short breaks
- 9 out of 10 parent carers are concerned about cuts to local services that they or their families need
- Only 16% of mothers with disabled children work compared to 61% of all mothers -due to barriers to employment including lack of access to childcare for disabled children
Families with disabled children should be given the support they need to participate in their community and reach their potential.
