SMA is considered a rare condition. Most individuals with SMA are diagnosed with one of four different types of the condition; these are known as SMA Types 1-4.
There are, however, even more rare sub-types of SMA which are usually caused by a mistake in a gene somewhere outside of the most commonly affected chromosomal region. In this article, Dr Alex Murphy discusses the research carried out into three of these rare sub-types of SMA: Kennedy's, SMARD, Distal.
